Encouraging signs for Leeds

With three games gone in the season, Simon Grayson can be satisfied with how his Leeds team has started.

Despite losing their opening match at home to Derby, they bounced back to beat Lincoln City 4-0 in the Carling Cup and followed that up with a battling draw away to Nottingham Forest in their second league game.

The new players have settled in pretty well at Elland Road, Lloyd Sam and Kasper Schmeichel have taken most of the plaudits since signing for the club this summer. Sanchez Watt has looked dangerous in attack and both full backs, Paul Connelly and Fede Bassone, have looked decent.

While there have been plenty of positives for Grayson, his need to strengthen his squad further has been clear.

Another central defender wouldn't go amiss, Richard Naylor has looked a bit slow for this league so far but with Patrick Kisnorbo due to return from injury before Christmas, Grayson may sit tight on that issue.

The midfield has looked creative but has lacked a holding player to shore things up in the middle of the park. Up front Luciano Becchio has scored twice this season but has looked a little lonely at times. Despite the clubs reluctance to admit it, they still need to replace Beckford. Billy Paynter should return from injury soon but the former Swindon striker is a similar player to Becchio and lacks the blistering pace of Beckford.

During the summer, countless names have been mentioned as Leeds targets to replace 30-goal Beckford, nearly all have come to nothing but it's reported that Grayson is still in the market for a speedy front-man. As with a lot of teams in this League, Leeds will wait to see which players are left out of the 25-man Premier League squads and see who is available, most probably on loan deals.

This could prove to be the best idea for Grayson who hasn't been given much money by his frugal chairman, Ken Bates. If a few more players are added, then pundits like Andy Gray will start tipping the side for success.

The club still have some players to come back from injury, along with Paynter and Kisnorbo, Robert Snodgrass has been out since damaging his knee in a pre-season friendly. The Scottish winger is due to return in the next couple of weeks and will be a boost to the side when he does. Both Max Gradel and Davide Somma have been suspended from the opening games of the season due to red cards on the final day of last season. They will both be itching to get started after looking sharp in pre-season, Gradel in particular was on fire during his clubs pre-season matches.

Meanwhile, despite the fact many people made Portsmouth betting tips for relegation from the Championship they have enjoyed a decent start to the season.
